Moore Farm Rehabilitation
-
The original Moore Farm construction is the only remaining preserved equestrian property in the National Capital Region. Recognizing its unique significance, the design focused on celebrating its distinctive wooden structure. This commitment to honouring the building's historical value guided the project's development and layout earning it the 2013 Cecobois Wood Design Award in the Heritage Category.
The rehabilitation focused on modernizing the wood-framed barn while preserving its Queen Anne Revival aesthetic and proportions. Efforts included restoring salvageable wood siding and, where replacement was required, expertly crafting new to match existing. The introduction of a custom railing system, designed to be compatible with the barn's heritage characteristics, along with new barrier-free washrooms, facilitated its transformation into a comfortable event venue.
To make the building more suitable for its intended use, the newly insulated walls and roof were designed to keep energy costs down and maintain a comfortable indoor environment. Modern mechanical and electrical systems were integrated and sustainable features such as a geothermal field, ceiling fans, and operable skylights were added to promote natural ventilation, breathing fresh life into the historic structure.
